Why Are There More Drunk Driving Accidents in the Summer?

    JustinBy JustinJuly 25, 2024No Comments3 Mins Read

Summer brings with it gatherings, road trips and relaxed attitudes. Unfortunately, this combination can sometimes lead to a dangerous problem: drinking and driving. While drunk driving is a year-round threat, statistics show a significant increase in drunk driving car accidents during the summer months. Let’s explore why this happens and what you can do to protect yourself if you’re involved in a car accident caused by a drunk driver.

Increased Social Gatherings and Alcohol Consumption

Summer is a time for celebration. From backyard barbeques and pool parties to graduation ceremonies and vacations, gatherings abound. Many of these events involve alcohol consumption. With more opportunities to drink, the risk of someone getting behind the wheel while impaired also rises.

New Teen Drivers on the Road

Summer break means freedom for teenagers, many of whom are new or inexperienced drivers. This lack of experience, coupled with the increased likelihood of underage drinking during summer break, creates a dangerous situation on the roads.

    Increased Travel and Road Trips

Summer is prime time for road trips and vacations. More people are on the roads, often traveling long distances. Alcohol consumption during these trips can be tempting.

    Warmer Weather and Relaxed Attitudes

The warm weather and carefree summer vibe can lead to a relaxed risk perception. People might underestimate the effects of alcohol on their judgment and coordination, leading them to believe they are sober enough to drive when they are not.

Steps to Take if a Drunk Driver Hits You

If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in a car accident caused by a drunk driver, prioritize your safety and that of others involved. If possible, pull over to a safe location and call 911 immediately. Report the accident and any injuries sustained.

Here are some additional steps to take if it’s safe to do so:

    • Gather Evidence: If you are able, take pictures of the scene of the accident, your vehicle damage, and any visible injuries.
    • Exchange Information: Exchange contact and insurance information with any other drivers involved.
    • Get witness contact information: Ask any witnesses for their names, emails and phone numbers.
    • Seek Medical Attention: Even if you don’t feel immediate pain, be checked out by a doctor. Adrenaline can mask injuries, and some may not become apparent until later.
    • Contact a Personal Injury Attorney: Attorney J.J. Dominguez of The Dominguez Firm explains this vital step, “A car accident attorney with experience handling drunk driving collisions can help you navigate the legal process, understand your rights, and ensure you receive fair compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.”

    Drunk Driving Statistics by State

Drunk driving accidents are a nationwide problem. However, some states saw a far higher proportion of drunk driving fatalities in 2021, the most recent year for which records are available. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), two states stood out:

    • Montana – 44%
    • Texas – 42%

Not far behind were Ohio, Rhode Island, and Washington, where drunk driving accounted for 39% of all traffic accident deaths.

Remember, every drunk driver on the road is a potential threat. By understanding the reasons why drunk driving car accidents increase in the summer and taking steps to protect yourself, you can stay safe and enjoy the season responsibly.
