How to Improve Your Supply Chain Strategy through Dropshipping

    JustinBy JustinDecember 12, 2023No Comments5 Mins Read

With the world of e-commerce constantly growing, finding ways to reduce costs and expand your customer base has never been more important. Dropshipping is an advantageous way for both suppliers and intermediaries to benefit from the retail market.

Whether you are a supplier looking to break into a larger consumer market or an intermediary hoping to find a reliable company to take care of packaging, strapping, and shipping your inventory, effectively implementing dropshipping into your supply chain strategies can reap long-term rewards.

    What is Supply Chain Management?

Supply chain is a phrase used to refer to the process of bringing a product from a manufacturer to the customer. Supply chain management is not a new concept, but it has become a valuable aspect of any business model as the retail market has become more globalized. Retail is no longer restricted to local operations, which has forced manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers alike to find a more efficient and effective system to handle this ever-growing scope.

Supply chain management is often referred to as the controller of the supply chain, and without an effective plan in place, a manufacturer can end up creating too much or too little of the wrong product. The wholesaler will be stocking products that are unlikely to sell, and retailers will run out of high-demand products far too quickly.

    How Does Dropshipping Work?

A dropshipping supply chain is a logistical model where the seller of products doesn’t keep their own inventory in stock. Instead, once the product has been ordered off their e-commerce website, the order and shipment details are transferred to a third-party distributor responsible for packing, shipping, and delivery of the bought item.

In traditional supply chains, the retailer selling the product will fill the order and ship it out of their own inventory. However, dropshipping supply chains mean the retailer never handles the product themselves. The third-party fulfillment company will charge retailers a service fee, and in turn, the retailer will charge the customer for the product.

Creating a Successful Dropshipping Supply Chain

As a supplier, using dropshipping to improve your supply chain strategies carries many benefits. It allows you to connect with the relevant partners with the customer bases you are hoping to target, who are already established in international business sectors and markets you want to enter and can effectively maintain your brand image.

As an intermediary, you will be able to increase your sales by offering more products without investing in inventory upfront, leading to reduced operating costs by decreasing storage and warehouse needs and eliminating the risk around testing new products.

If you choose to use dropshipping in your supply chain, you need to select a product that has a decent market demand with enough margin to allow competitive pricing. It is also crucial to monitor your ROI or return on investment, over time to ensure your chosen selling method is as profitable as possible.

Furthermore, while the supplier does take on more risk in dropshipping, you are still responsible for attracting customers, collecting and processing orders and returns, and providing customer services. As a result, you should be confident that your supplier partner will deliver the service your customers expect.

Additionally, when choosing the best supply partner, it is vital to properly assess each potential option to ensure they possess the necessary experience, infrastructure, and work ethic that fits your business needs. With so much of your supply chain falling under their responsibility, it is essential to select a partner that will execute their job as effectively as possible.

The Role of Logistic Service Companies

While there are many benefits of using supply chain strategies that implement dropshipping, there are risks for both retailers and suppliers, mainly when the system is not run as effectively as it should be. Therefore, hiring a reputable and competent logistics service company that will allow you to optimize the supply chain to its full potential should not be underestimated.

By selecting a well-established and reliable logistics company, you benefit from a competent staff with immense experience and knowledge and a vast professional network with many industry connections. Alongside their valuable team is a modern and updated technical infrastructure system to ensure the best service for your customer base.

Hiring a company to handle your logistics allows you to redirect your time and focus on other aspects of your e-commerce business, including marketing strategies and future projects. And finally, by partnering with a professional and well-established logistics service company, you are guaranteed to upscale your business model.

    Points to Consider

While dropshipping carries many benefits, it is vital to be aware of the drawbacks that this logistics solution brings when it comes to your fulfillment model. First, there is less control over customer service and experience. When you hand over the fulfillment and shipping duties to a third-party company, you are relinquishing the control that comes with operating these processes yourself. Unless you have accurate information regarding the fulfillment, shipping, and delivery of orders, you won’t be able to properly track them, potentially leading to service issues.

Additionally, it is more challenging to manage quality control and stock shortages effectively. This is primarily due to the fact you never physically see your products, which prevents you from personally assessing the quality of the items and taking accurate stock. Instead, you must trust a third party to handle your inventory and the additional responsibilities that come with this.
