Did you know that a whopping 80% of hiring managers say a candidate’s interview skills are a significant factor in the decision-making process?

While your qualifications and experience matter, your ability to present yourself effectively during the interview can significantly impact your chances of getting hired.

Here are ten essential interview tips and strategies to help you shine and leave a lasting impression on the panelists.

    1.  Research and Preparation are Key

Before the interview, thoroughly research the company, its mission statement, and its values. Understanding the company culture and how your skills and experience align with its needs demonstrates your genuine interest in the position.

Additionally, research common interview questions and prepare thoughtful answers that highlight your strengths and qualifications.

    2.  Dress for Success

First impressions matter. Project professionalism by dressing appropriately for the company culture you researched.  A suit or tailored outfit might be appropriate for a traditional workplace, while business casual attire might be more fitting for a startup environment.  When in doubt, err on the side of formality.

Remember, a polished appearance shows respect for the interviewer and the opportunity you’re pursuing.

    3.  Arrive Early and Be Present

Punctuality is essential. Aim to arrive at least 10-15 minutes early to account for any unforeseen delays.  Being present means silencing your phone, putting away distractions, and focusing on the interview at hand.

    4.  Make a Confident Introduction and Maintain A Positive Body Language

Greet the interviewer with a firm handshake, make eye contact, and introduce yourself clearly.  Maintain good posture, avoid fidgeting, and project confidence through your body language. Here are some tips on how to maintain positive body language and show you’re a professional.

    • Greet the interviewer with a firm handshake, make direct eye contact, and introduce yourself clearly with a smile.
    • Maintain good posture throughout the interview. This demonstrates confidence and attentiveness.
    • Avoid fidgeting with your clothes or hair. Project a positive demeanor through your body language.
    • Lean in slightly when the interviewer is speaking to show you’re engaged.
    • Avoid crossing your arms or slouching, which can come across as closed-off or disinterested.
    • Show you are tech savvy by giving the interviewers your digital business cards for easier follow-up.

    5.  Actively Listen and Answer Clearly

Pay close attention to the interviewer’s questions.  Pause for a few seconds to formulate your response before speaking and avoid rambling or going off on tangents.

    6.  Highlight Your Achievements, Not Just Responsibilities

Don’t just list your job duties.  Focus on your accomplishments and the positive impact you made in previous roles.  Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your responses and showcase your problem-solving skills and ability to achieve results.

Your digital business card should also include links to these achievements, which will give potential employers in your network more details about you and explain why they should invite you for an interview.

    7.  Be Enthusiastic and Show Passion

Your enthusiasm for the position and the company will be evident.  Express your genuine interest in the opportunity and highlight what excites you about the role and the company culture.

    8.  Ask Thoughtful Questions

Prepare insightful questions beforehand that demonstrate your interest and initiative.  Questions about the role, the team, or company projects showcase your curiosity and desire to learn more.

    9.  Follow Up with a Thank You Note

After the interview, send a thank-you note to the interviewer within 24 hours. Reiterate your interest in the position and highlight key points discussed during the interview.  A thank-you note demonstrates professionalism and leaves a positive final impression.

    10.  Practice Makes Perfect

Practice your interview responses beforehand.  Conduct mock interviews with friends, family, or career counselors.  The more prepared you are, the more confident and articulate you’ll appear during the actual interview.

    Conclusion

By following these tips and strategies, you can approach your job interview with confidence and showcase your skills and qualifications in the best possible light.

Remember, the interview is a two-way street. While you’re being evaluated for the position, you’re also evaluating the company culture and fit for your career goals.  So go in prepared, and ask questions to set you apart from the competition and get a better understanding of the company.
