Fanatics has long wanted to enter the U.S. sports betting market. It is currently establishing its reputation as an online and retail sports betting operator. Its first retail sportsbook was launched in Maryland in January. May 2023 saw the beta version of its mobile sportsbooks in Ohio and Tennessee. Since then, it has been expanding its presence into other U.S. states.
PointsBet sold its U.S. assets to Fanatics in June. Its tech platform is helping the Fanatics brand to get going. Maryland, Ohio, Massachusetts, and Tennessee are some states where Fanatics is active. Seven other states have rebranded to “Points Bet: A Fanatics Experience.” It was live in 11 legal U.S. markets by the start of the NFL season in September.
Michigan remains a PointsBet casino
Sports betting and online casino activities are both doing very well in the Great Lakes state. Michigan still has a PointsBet casino, and there is no timeline for when Fanatics will go live in Michigan.
Fanatics was in discussions to purchase the betPARX sportsbook. With the betPARX technology stack provided by Playtech, the company could reach new heights. The deal didn’t happen, and Parx still owns betPARX, which operates in five U.S. states. In Michigan, Parx partners with Gun Lake Casino to offer playgunlake.com.
No license from the Michigan Gaming Control Board
The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) says Fanatics will have to make sure its proposed branding meets requirements stipulated in Michigan’s Lawful Internet Gaming Act. Fanatics doesn’t yet have a license in Michigan and is likely to keep trying to acquire one in 2024. It has huge business assets and really wants to enter the Michigan online gambling market.
Fanatics will sell college sports merchandise internationally
Fanatics already has a good reputation in the US in the college sports merchandising space. This gives it a good customer base of people who already support it. It recently announced a long-term agreement with leading US collegiate licensing company CLC. It will offer US college sports fans worldwide the chance to purchase a range of officially licensed products.
With the casino market size growing in the US, it’s no wonder the brand wants to get in on the action. With its significant resources and aggressive entry into the market, it intends to become the top sports betting product in the industry.
Access to the Michigan market
Michigan has authorized only 15 casinos to operate in the state. Access to the Michigan market would only be possible if one of the existing operators decided to exit the market or through acquisition. As existing operators are not likely to leave the highly lucrative market, the acquisition may be the most logical route. Fanatics has big goals for the future and believes it will eventually hold the majority of the market share.
