Will Your Retirement Income Last for 25 Years or More?

    OliviaBy OliviaAugust 27, 2026No Comments6 Mins Read

Retirement can last for decades, so your income plan needs to work well beyond the first few years. If you retire at sixty, it can be useful to test whether your savings and income could support you for twenty-five years or longer. Here is a checklist to help you assess whether your retirement income is built to last.

Check Whether Your Income Sources Are Guaranteed or Market-Linked

Your retirement income may come from pension payouts, interest income, rental income, annuities, or withdrawals from investments.

Start by separating these into predictable and market-linked sources. If you are comparing options for the best pension plan for your needs, check whether the income is guaranteed, market-linked, or dependent on the payout option you choose.

Knowing this helps you understand how much of your retirement income is stable and how much could vary over time.

    • Understand Your Pension Options Clearly

Before deciding how to structure your income, it is helpful to understand the types of pension in India and other retirement-income options available to you.

These can include the National Pension System, eligible employer pension arrangements, and annuity plans. Schemes such as the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme can also form part of a broader retirement-income strategy.

Each option comes with its own rules around liquidity, taxation, payouts, and investment risk, so compare them before deciding how they fit into your plan.

    • Stress-Test Your Plan Against Inflation

An income that feels comfortable today may not provide the same purchasing power fifteen or twenty years from now.

Check whether any part of your retirement income can grow over time or whether it stays fixed. A fixed payout can lose purchasing power as prices rise.

This is why inflation should be built into your retirement calculations rather than treated as an afterthought.

    • Account for Healthcare Costs Separately

Healthcare can become a larger part of your expenses as you age, while medical costs can also rise over time.

Keep a separate healthcare buffer in addition to suitable health insurance. This can reduce the need to withdraw from long-term investments unexpectedly when medical expenses arise.

Also review whether your insurance cover still matches your needs as you move through retirement.

    • Avoid Withdrawing Too Much Too Soon

It can be easy to withdraw more in the early years of retirement without checking how long the remaining corpus needs to last.

Instead of relying on a fixed rule, review your withdrawal rate regularly against your remaining corpus, expenses, investment returns, inflation, and expected retirement horizon.

The aim is to balance your current lifestyle with the need to keep enough money available for later years.

    • Diversify Beyond a Single Pension Product

Relying entirely on one source of retirement income can leave you more dependent on how that particular product performs or pays out.

Using different sources of retirement income can reduce that dependence. The right mix of guaranteed, fixed-income, and market-linked options should depend on your risk tolerance, liquidity needs, tax position, and retirement horizon.

Diversification does not remove risk completely, but it can help you avoid relying on one source for all your retirement needs.

    • Plan for a Surviving Spouse

If you are married, check what happens to your retirement income if you pass away before your spouse.

Some annuity plans offer joint-life options under which payments can continue to a surviving spouse, subject to the payout structure selected.

Check how much income continues, for how long, and whether the payout changes after the first annuitant passes away.

    • Review the Plan Periodically

Your retirement plan should not remain unchanged simply because you have already retired.

Review it periodically and whenever there is a major change in your expenses, health, income needs, family circumstances, or investment portfolio.

A plan that suited you at sixty may need adjustments later as your priorities and financial needs change.

    Putting It All Together

A retirement lasting twenty-five years or more is a useful scenario to include when testing whether your income plan can withstand a longer retirement.

Building an income mix that considers predictable payouts, inflation, healthcare costs, liquidity, and long-term growth can make your retirement plan more resilient over time.

The goal is not to predict exactly how long retirement will last. It is to make sure your finances have enough flexibility to support you if it lasts longer than expected.

    A Quick Example Worth Considering

Say you retire at sixty with a corpus planned around twenty years of expenses. If your retirement lasts until eighty-five, your money may need to support an additional five years.

Planning for a longer retirement now can help you identify whether your current savings rate, retirement corpus, and income sources need to change.

This is why it can be useful to test your plan against more than one retirement horizon rather than relying on a single estimate.

    One More Thing to Check

Before choosing an annuity or guaranteed-income product, check the insurer, product terms, payout conditions, and applicable guarantees carefully.

Also read how the payout changes if you choose a joint-life option instead of a single-life annuity. The income amount may differ depending on the option selected.

Check how much income would continue to your spouse and whether any other benefits apply after your death.

    A Note on Healthcare Specifically

Set aside a portion of your retirement corpus for medical needs instead of relying only on your regular monthly income.

This can help you manage unexpected healthcare expenses without immediately disrupting the money set aside for everyday living.

Review your health insurance cover periodically as healthcare needs and costs change. Cover that suits you at sixty may not necessarily meet your needs later in retirement.

    Final Thought

Twenty-five years is a long period to plan for accurately, which is why flexibility matters.

Review your numbers regularly, keep enough room for changing expenses, and adjust your income strategy when needed.

You do not need to predict every future cost perfectly. What matters is testing your plan against different scenarios and making changes early enough to keep your retirement income aligned with your needs.
