    Before deciding how to structure your income, it is helpful to understand the types of pension in India and other retirement-income options available to you.

    These can include the National Pension System, eligible employer pension arrangements, and annuity plans. Schemes such as the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme can also form part of a broader retirement-income strategy.

    Each option comes with its own rules around liquidity, taxation, payouts, and investment risk, so compare them before deciding how they fit into your plan.

    • Stress-Test Your Plan Against Inflation

    An income that feels comfortable today may not provide the same purchasing power fifteen or twenty years from now.

    Check whether any part of your retirement income can grow over time or whether it stays fixed. A fixed payout can lose purchasing power as prices rise.

    Planning for a longer retirement now can help you identify whether your current savings rate, retirement corpus, and income sources need to change.

    This is why it can be useful to test your plan against more than one retirement horizon rather than relying on a single estimate.

    One More Thing to Check

    Before choosing an annuity or guaranteed-income product, check the insurer, product terms, payout conditions, and applicable guarantees carefully.

    Also read how the payout changes if you choose a joint-life option instead of a single-life annuity. The income amount may differ depending on the option selected.

    Check how much income would continue to your spouse and whether any other benefits apply after your death.
