The Boardroom Face: Why Senior Men Are Quietly Softening the Frown

    OliviaBy OliviaFebruary 10, 2025Updated:July 21, 2026No Comments7 Mins Read

A managing director I have worked with keeps a sticky note pressed to the edge of his monitor. One word sits on it: “unclench.” He added it after a recorded quarterly review, when he caught his own face in the speaker tile and read it the way his board might have. His listening expression, the one he holds while someone else talks, looked faintly disapproving. He was concentrating. The lens flattened that concentration into judgement, and eleven people sat on the receiving end of it for an hour.

That distance between what a leader feels and what a leader transmits has widened as senior work drifted onto screens. In a room, colleagues read your posture, your hands, and everything else the body does while you sit there. On a video call they get a cropped rectangle of your face, lit from below by a laptop, held in place for the length of the meeting. Small habitual movements start to carry outsized weight. The vertical crease between the brows, the one that deepens the moment you read a dense slide, becomes something like a headline.

The camera has opinions about your resting face

Executive presence used to be coached in physical rooms. Handshake, eye contact, the angle you took at the table, the pause before you answered. Much of that grammar has thinned out. What remains, magnified, is the face. Gallery view lines your expression up beside everyone else’s at matching size, and the muscles you never think about start doing quiet public relations on your behalf.

Two features tend to dominate. The frown lines between the brows (clinicians call the muscle group the glabella) and the horizontal bands that stack across the forehead. Both are honest products of a working life: years of focus and squinting at figures, of absorbing bad quarters and holding a straight face through them. They also read, on camera, as tension or displeasure long after the meeting has moved on. Plenty of capable leaders have been asked whether they are upset when they were simply thinking hard.

The optics of a screen-first schedule

Consider how a typical senior day now runs. Back to back calls, each one recorded or transcribed, your face parked in a small bright box while you listen far more than you talk. Listening is where the resting frown does its damage, because that is when your face is unguarded and the muscles settle into their default. A single deep glabellar line can make an hour of neutral attention look like an hour of quiet objection. Colleagues rarely mention it, and that is the trap. Nobody tells you that your neutral face has been quietly editorialising for the whole call, so the impression compounds meeting after meeting until it becomes part of how people read you.

None of this was a problem when most of the signal came from a room full of body language. It became one when the medium shrank to a headshot. That shift, more than any change in vanity, is what put the subject on the table for men who would never have considered it a decade ago.

    Why the frown gets misfiled

Human faces are cheap signals that others read fast, and often wrong. A settled frown line can register as impatience in a negotiation, or as scepticism during a pitch. In a one-to-one with a nervous junior, it can read as plain coldness. None of that may be true. The signal still lands, and it costs a leader something in trust and warmth that he would rather spend elsewhere.

This is the practical reason a growing number of men in senior roles have started asking about softening the area, and doing it discreetly. The motive is rarely vanity in the ordinary sense. It sits closer to how the same men think about a well-cut jacket or a clear speaking voice: lower the noise so the message travels.

    The quiet arrival of “Brotox”

Cosmetic injectables carried a feminine reputation for a long time, and many men filed the whole category under “not for me.” That has shifted. Colleagues started using the nickname Brotox precisely because demand from men grew enough to warrant its own shorthand. Barbers and gym friends discuss it now with far less of the old awkwardness.

The product itself is a neuromodulator, a purified botulinum toxin type A. In Canada, one Health Canada approved option is Nuceiva, though most people still search the whole category under the familiar Botox name. Injected in tiny amounts into a specific muscle, it temporarily interrupts the chemical signal (acetylcholine) that tells that muscle to contract. Ease the right muscle and the skin above it creases less, so the settled line softens over the following couple of weeks.

Results build gradually, usually peaking around the two week mark, and tend to hold for roughly three to four months before muscle activity returns. The appointment is short and minimally invasive, and most people head straight back to their day with little to no downtime. That last detail matters to a calendar stacked with meetings.

Subtle is the entire brief for men

Here is where the work gets particular. Male facial muscles are typically stronger and heavier than female ones, and the aesthetic goal is usually different. A man in a leadership seat generally wants to look rested and a touch less severe while keeping every bit of his expressiveness. Flatten the forehead completely and you get the opposite of authority: a smooth, faintly startled look that reads as artificial both on camera and off.

Getting that right is a matter of dosing and placement judgement, and it depends far more on skill than on volume. It calls for an injector who treats the male face as its own brief and knows how much movement to preserve. At Victoria Rose Aesthetics, a registered-nurse-owned clinic in Pickering, Ontario, the approach to Botox for men in Pickering is built around that restraint. Founder Victoria Rose Cyr, RN, is a clinical trainer who teaches other injectors across Canada, and she sets the standard that the clinic’s team of injectors works to. Naming that matters for a simple reason: the difference between a natural result and an obvious one lives in the hands of whoever holds the needle.

What it does, and what it will not do

Honesty serves a leader better than a brochure here. A neuromodulator softens lines caused by muscle movement. It does not lift sagging skin or erase the deep static folds already etched into a face at rest, and it will not touch the underlying clock. It is a specific tool for a specific job, and results vary from one person to the next.

How many units a given man needs, and how long the effect holds for him, depend on his own anatomy: muscle strength, metabolism, the area being treated, and how heavily those muscles have worked over the years. Stronger muscles often call for a different dose than a first-time estimate would suggest. A proper consultation sorts this out in person, which is why careful clinics resist quoting a magic number over the phone.

Men also pursue the same injections for reasons that have nothing to do with a camera. Relaxing an overworked jaw muscle can ease the clenching and grinding of TMJ. Some patients seek it for chronic migraines, others for excessive underarm sweating that no shirt seems to survive. The cosmetic and the medical uses share one underlying mechanism.

A measured way to weigh it up

If you are a senior man turning this over, treat it the way you would any decision with your name attached. Book a consultation instead of a same-day treatment. Ask who will actually perform the injections and what their training is. Ask to see natural results on faces like yours. Say plainly that you want to keep your expressions and simply lower the resting frown, then watch whether the provider listens or pushes.

The men who are happiest with this tend to want less rather than more. Often it is a single treated area and a conservative dose, a result their own family does not clock as changed, while the board reads them only as calmer. Presence has always turned on signal clarity. For a certain kind of executive, easing a permanent frown is one small edit to that signal, made quietly, and then left alone.
