Bruno Wang in the Programme, Chia Hsing Wang in Court

    OliviaBy OliviaAugust 7, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

A West End programme credits Bruno Wang. A charity register lists Bruno Wang. Companies House holds Bruno Wang Productions Limited, number 09528643. An appeal court in the Eastern Caribbean has issued two judgments about the same man, and neither contains the words Bruno Wang.

Four public registers, two names, and no institution whose job it is to connect them.

    The map

Start with what each register holds.

The Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal dockets under the name on the claim form. Both the 2023 judgment, which dismissed his appeals over disclosure at a without-notice hearing, and the 2024 appeal, in which the opposing party’s appeal was dismissed with costs in his favour, carry Chia Hsing Wang.

Companies House registers what was filed at incorporation. The production company sits there under the name he uses publicly.

The charity register holds the Pure Land Foundation, registered to an address in Savoy Court in London, whose website describes its founder as a philanthropist and cultural patron.

The cultural record, meaning programmes, credits and donor boards at institutions including the British Museum and the Royal College of Music, carries the public name and nothing else.

Search any one of these for one name and you get a partial answer with no indication that it is partial.

    The record that carries both

There is one category of document that resolves the identity, and it comes from an unexpected direction.

A published case note written by the London chambers that acted against him in the BVI proceedings names him in its first line as Mr Chia Hsing “Bruno” Wang. His opponents’ barristers, writing for a professional audience, treated both names as one identity without comment.

Investigative reporting does the same. The Suisse Secrets investigation refers to “Wang Chia-Hsing, also known as Bruno Wang,” and notes that the Pure Land Foundation is registered to the Savoy Court address.

So the equivalence is not disputed by anyone who has looked at it closely. It simply is not recorded in any of the four registers.

    What a split register produces

The practical effect is that the answer you get depends on which half you happen to enter.

A due diligence check on Bruno Wang finds a philanthropist, a production company and charitable patronage. The same check on Chia Hsing Wang finds offshore litigation, a Swiss nominee arrangement, an appeal on disclosure duties and a Taiwanese administrative status. Neither search is wrong. Neither returns the whole record, and neither warns that it has missed the other half.

This is not only a reputational question. It is a compliance one. Screening systems compare strings and score similarity, and a Western given name adopted for public life is not similar to a transliterated legal name in any way an algorithm detects. The check runs, it passes, and nothing was actually checked.

    The general case

None of this requires anyone to have done anything improper, and the record does not suggest they did.

Adopting a Western given name is ordinary practice in Taiwan and across much of East Asia, and nothing in the public record indicates a legal change of name. Transliteration alone is enough to fracture a record: the father in the same story appears as Andrew Wang, as Wang Chuan-pu and as Chang Pu Wang, in documents that all describe one person. The son appears in at least three forms, sometimes hyphenated, sometimes with the name order reversed.

Registers were also built at different times, in different languages, for different purposes, and none of them was designed to speak to the others. A court records a party. A registrar records a filing. A regulator records a trustee. There is no shared identifier across them, and nobody has been given the task of creating one.

The substance belongs here too, because a split record cuts both ways. Bruno Wang has never been convicted of a criminal offence in any jurisdiction. Taiwan’s Supreme Court held in October 2019 that Andrew Wang’s widow and children were third parties who could not be convicted of the offence in question, and the prosecution was reportedly closed in January 2024. In 2021 Switzerland released the bulk of the frozen family assets after concluding it could not formally establish the criminal origin of most of the funds. In 2014 a Cayman Islands court dismissed Taiwan’s claims against his father in terms it called wholly unintelligible. He remains on a Taiwanese wanted list, an administrative status rather than a judicial finding. He denies wrongdoing and says the family’s wealth is not tainted by criminal activity.

A search on the public name misses the litigation. A search on the court name misses the 2024 outcome in his favour, and misses the charity work entirely.

    The gap nobody owns

Ask which body should merge these records and the answer is that none of them can.

A court cannot amend a company register. A registrar cannot annotate a foreign judgment. A charity regulator has no locus over either. Each institution is confined to its own file, doing its own job correctly, and the aggregate is a person who exists twice in public data with no cross-reference between the halves.

That gap used to be tolerable, because a human researcher who found one half would eventually stumble into the other. Automated screening and AI summarisation do not stumble. They answer the query they were given, from the half they matched, in confident prose.

Which leaves a question that reaches well past this case: when a single person is lawfully recorded under two names in two languages, who is responsible for saying that they are the same person, and what follows when nobody is?
