Why Verified Sustainability Data Is Becoming a Competitive Advantage in Construction

    OliviaBy OliviaMay 22, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

Environmental accountability is rapidly becoming one of the most important competitive factors in the global construction industry. Manufacturers are under growing pressure to provide transparent, standardized, and verifiable sustainability data as governments, developers, and procurement teams tighten carbon reporting requirements for building projects.

According to The Next Web, Estonian startup Lodestellar is helping construction manufacturers improve the quality of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) through an AI-powered review platform designed to detect errors and inconsistencies before formal verification begins.

The company’s platform addresses a growing challenge across the construction sector: the rising demand for reliable environmental disclosures combined with increasingly complex compliance standards. As sustainability regulations evolve globally, EPDs are becoming essential for manufacturers seeking to participate in large infrastructure projects and multi-million euro tenders.

EPDs are technical documents that calculate the environmental impact of products throughout their lifecycle using standardized Life Cycle Assessment methodologies. They include detailed data about carbon emissions, raw materials, manufacturing processes, transportation, energy consumption, and end-of-life disposal impacts.

What once served mainly as a voluntary sustainability initiative has now become a strategic business requirement. Procurement specialists increasingly rely on EPDs when comparing suppliers because verified environmental data provides measurable insight into the sustainability performance of building materials and products.

Manufacturers without EPDs often face disadvantages during procurement evaluations. In many cases, buyers apply estimated environmental values to products lacking verified declarations, which can make those products appear less sustainable compared to competitors with certified documentation.

This market shift has significantly increased the number of EPDs being developed and submitted for verification. However, the process remains both expensive and time-consuming. Producing a single EPD can cost manufacturers more than €10,000 and may take several months to complete due to multiple rounds of revisions and compliance reviews.

Lodestellar was created to reduce those inefficiencies. The platform functions similarly to automated code review tools used in software engineering. Instead of checking software syntax, the system scans EPDs line by line to identify missing disclosures, inconsistent wording, unsupported assumptions, and gaps in traceability before documents reach independent verifiers.

The software automatically determines which standards apply to each declaration, including EN 15804+A2 and ISO 21930, then generates detailed guidance to help developers correct issues early in the workflow. According to the company, catching errors before formal verification can reduce costs, accelerate approvals, and lower compliance risks for manufacturers.

The timing of the platform’s growth reflects wider regulatory changes across Europe and other global markets. The European Commission recently introduced frameworks intended to standardize building lifecycle calculations across the EU, making sustainability data more comparable between competing products and suppliers.

In parallel, the European Union is preparing to expand the use of Digital Product Passports — digital records that store structured environmental and technical information about products throughout their lifecycle. EPD data is expected to become a key component of these systems.

The construction sector itself remains a central target for decarbonization policies because it accounts for a substantial share of global greenhouse gas emissions. Governments, investors, and major developers are increasingly prioritizing measurable environmental performance rather than relying on broad sustainability marketing claims.

Artificial intelligence is now beginning to play a larger role in managing environmental data complexity. AI-powered tools can automate repetitive quality checks, identify hidden inconsistencies, and improve documentation workflows at scale. However, industry experts note that trust and independent oversight remain essential for maintaining credibility in sustainability reporting.

One of the key concerns in environmental disclosure is ensuring that data remains understandable and traceable for both specialists and non-specialists involved in procurement decisions. Tools capable of improving clarity and consistency may help reduce disputes and verification delays later in the supply chain.

Lodestellar’s founders believe the future of procurement will increasingly depend on structured and verified environmental data. As digital purchasing systems evolve, buyers may eventually use AI tools to compare products based on multiple variables simultaneously, including carbon impact, cost efficiency, durability, fire resistance, and other technical performance factors.

The company emerged from an Estonian digital construction initiative that connected software developers with sustainability professionals to create innovative technology solutions for the building industry. Estonia’s reputation as a technology hub and its strong export-oriented manufacturing sector helped create favorable conditions for the platform’s development.

According to Lodestellar, the software has already analyzed hundreds of EPDs, including declarations that had previously passed formal verification. Many still contained issues that could have been identified earlier through automated quality control.

As sustainability regulations continue to expand internationally, demand for accurate environmental reporting is expected to grow well beyond construction. Businesses capable of producing reliable, transparent, and standardized sustainability data may gain a stronger competitive position as procurement systems become increasingly data-driven.

The broader trend suggests that environmental transparency is evolving from a branding exercise into a core operational requirement — one where data quality, verification, and digital automation are likely to become critical components of future business strategy.
