    The University of Toronto was founded on March 15, 1827, as King’s College. Its first campus was located on the grounds surrounding Queen’s Park in Toronto. The University of Toronto offers over 700 undergraduate degrees and 200 graduate degrees. Graphically, 25 percent of the total student body at the University of Toronto is international. Its educational strengths include being the top medical university in Canada and its educational system, comparable to those of Oxford and Cambridge.

    This university is ranked number one in Canada and among the best globally in terms of research impact. Student life and enrollment: The university had nearly 100,000 students enrolled in 2023. It emphasizes experiential learning, particularly paid employment, research, and study abroad. Campus life is vibrant, although making friends may require proactive behavior due to the large student population.

    University of British Columbia

    The University of British Columbia is a public institution located in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1908 and opened in 1915, the university has two primary campuses: the Vancouver campus and the Okanagan campus in Kelowna. The Vancouver campus is the larger of the two, housing over 85 percent of UBC’s student population. In a recent year, 23 percent of students at the Vancouver campus and approximately 13 percent at the Okanagan campus were international students. University housing is guaranteed for first-year undergraduate UBC students, and newly admitted international students in their second years also receive housing priority. Housing is also available for returning undergraduate and graduate students.

    The Vancouver campus hosts more than two dozen academic divisions, while the Okanagan campus has eight. The academic calendar for both campuses includes two winter and two summer semesters, although the summer session is optional. The primary language of instruction at UBC is English. First-year international students can choose to enroll in the Vantage One program at UBC’s Vantage College, which aims to help students improve their English-language skills by extending the first year of study from eight to 11 months. Upon completion, students progress to the second year of their UBC program. Examples of UBC research facilities include Canada’s national subatomic physics laboratory, TRIUMF, the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm, and the Institute for Healthy Living and Chronic Disease Prevention. International students represent 33 percent of the University of British Columbia’s student population.

    McGill University

    McGill University is a public institution founded in 1821 in Quebec, Canada. It has two campuses: the downtown campus in Montreal and the McDonald campus in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. The two campuses are approximately 20 miles apart. The primary language of instruction is English, although in recent years, approximately 20 percent of students have stated that French is their first language. In fact, about half of Montreal’s population speaks French as their first language. About a quarter of the student body is international, with students from more than 150 countries. University housing is available for undergraduate and graduate students on both campuses.

    The university comprises 10 faculties: agricultural and environmental sciences, arts, dentistry, education, engineering, law, management, medicine, music, and science, offering approximately 300 programs of study. Approximately two-thirds of the university’s students study at the undergraduate level. The university is affiliated with various teaching hospitals, and its medical school is the oldest in Canada. The creation of the first artificial blood cells is among the university’s research achievements.
    Singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen and actor William Shatner are McGill graduates. The university has trained more Rhodes Scholars than any other institution in Canada.

    McMaster University

    McMaster University is a public institution founded in 1887. The Canadian university’s first campus is in suburban Hamilton, Ontario, near the western shore of Lake Ontario, not far from the U.S. border. Other campuses are located in downtown Hamilton, Burlington, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Niagara. The university’s international students come from more than 75 countries, and its full-time faculty members come from more than 55 countries. University-operated student housing is available, through specialized options such as themed living communities, women-only communities, healthy and active living communities, and global perspective communities.

    The university has six main academic divisions: engineering, health sciences, humanities, sciences, social sciences, and the DeGroote School of Business. The primary language of instruction is English. McMaster University has an arts and sciences program that enrolls approximately 60 students annually and offers a more interdisciplinary undergraduate experience. The academic calendar for McMaster undergraduate students is semester-based and includes an optional spring/summer semester.

    The graduate academic calendar has three semesters: fall, winter, and summer. Some of the university’s more than 60 research centers and institutes include the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis, the McMaster Centre for eBusiness Research, and the Canada Centre for Electron Microscopy. The university has its own nuclear reactor, which is used for research. An interesting fact about the university is that one-fifth of Albert Einstein’s brain is kept in a jar in one of the university’s laboratories, where a McMaster neuroscientist studies it and other specimens.

    McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, is known for its innovative approach to education and research. The medical and engineering programs at this university are highly regarded. Apart from the medical faculty, McMaster University has other best faculties, namely the social sciences faculty, engineering faculty, science, business and humanities faculties.

    University of Alberta

    The University of Alberta is a public institution founded in 1908. Located in the province of Alberta in Western Canada, approximately 80 percent of the university’s students pursue undergraduate degrees. The university comprises five campuses, four of which are in the city of Edmonton, including the main North Campus, which covers approximately 50 city blocks. The university’s fifth location, the Augustana Campus, is located about an hour from Edmonton in the rural town of Camrose. Approximately 1,000 students study at the smaller Augustana Campus, which focuses on the liberal arts and sciences.

    The university offers studies in a wide range of disciplines, including arts, business, engineering, and medicine. English is the language of instruction, except at the university’s Saint-Jean Campus, where French is the primary language. Over 20 percent of the University of Alberta’s student body is international. University housing is available for undergraduate and graduate students in Edmonton and on the Augustana campus.

    University of Montreal

    The University of Montreal is a public institution founded in 1878. Originally a branch of Université Laval de Québec, it became an independent institution in 1919. It is affiliated with two other schools: Polytechnique Montréal, an engineering school, and HEC Montréal, a business school. The university and its affiliated schools are located in Montreal, Quebec, one of Canada’s most populous metropolitan areas. Approximately one-quarter of students at these three institutions pursue graduate studies. The university provides housing (dormitories) for full-time undergraduate and graduate students.

    The university, called UdeM, has more than a dozen academic divisions spanning social sciences, natural sciences, and health, as well as arts and humanities disciplines. The primary language of instruction is French, although some graduate programs, such as doctoral programs in biochemistry, neuroscience, and pharmacology, accept English-speaking students. Tutoring, workshops, and other resources are available for students wishing to improve their French language skills.

    The Institute for Immunology and Cancer Research, the Cyberjustice Laboratory, and the International Center for Comparative Criminology are among the university’s research units. Several University of Montreal researchers collaborate on projects with institutions around the world, particularly in France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

    University of Waterloo

    The University of Waterloo, often referred to as Waterloo or UW, is one of Canada’s leading institutions of higher education known for its innovation and pragmatic approach to education.

    The University of Waterloo is a public institution founded in 1957. This Canadian university’s main campus is in Waterloo, Ontario, near several Great Lakes and the US border. It has satellite campuses in nearby Cambridge, Kitchener, and Stratford. More than 30,000 students attend the university.

    The university has six main academic divisions: applied health sciences, arts, engineering, environment, mathematics, and science. The main campus has four affiliated university colleges: Conrad Grebel University College, Renison University College, St. Jerome’s University, and St. Paul’s University College. Students can earn degrees at Waterloo in smaller academic communities. The primary language of instruction is English, and the university’s academic calendar consists of three semesters. Many students participate in co-op programs that allow them to alternate academic semesters with semesters spent in the workforce. More than 120 Waterloo undergraduate programs offer co-op options.

    University of Ottawa
