Myth: Hip replacement surgery is only for the elderly.

Fact: Younger patients with severe hip damage or arthritis can also benefit significantly.

Hip replacement surgery isn’t for a specific age group. It’s the last line of treatment for people with severe issues. Usually, people who undergo hip surgery have osteoarthritis, a progressive condition caused by wear and tear of the hip joint. Because the condition develops over years (even decades), most patients who opt for hip surgery are over 50 years old.

That being said, hip replacement is a viable option in younger people with conditions such as hip dysplasia, fractures, or infections. Some adults in their 30s can also develop femora-acetabular impingement, which rapidly leads to severe osteoarthritis.

    Myth: Recovery takes years.

Fact: Most return to normal activities within 3 to 6 months, with pain relief and improved mobility often within weeks.

Modern advances in physical therapy and rehabilitation continually reduce the post-operative recovery period. Early mobilisation post-hip joint replacement surgery results in a reduced length of hospital stay and minimises long-term complications and adverse effects.

Few, if any, patients spend years recovering from a hip replacement. Usually, through a combination of physical therapy and daily activity, they see a gradual reduction in swelling, pain, and weakness, allowing them to return to normal life within 3 to 6 months.

The speed of recovery is dependent on the patient’s underlying health. The healthier and fitter a person is, the quicker they will bounce back post-operatively.

Myth: Hip replacements are not durable.

Fact: Modern replacements often last 15-20 years or more due to advanced materials and techniques.

Nothing lasts forever. Even the most advanced modern materials will eventually wear out due to continual use. The longevity of your hip replacement will depend on the materials used and your activity levels. The more you use your hip and the greater the stress exerted on it, the faster it will wear out.

According to a 2019 review in The Lancet, the 25-year survival of hip replacements was 58%, giving you a greater than half chance you won’t need a replacement during this period. Over a 15-year period, around 90% of hip replacements survive.

You can extend the lifespan of your hip replacement by following post-operative instructions, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding high-impact exercise, and strengthening the surrounding muscles.

Myth: You cannot be active after a hip replacement.

Fact: Many return to active lifestyles, including low-impact sports like swimming, cycling, and golf.

This myth is extremely persistent, but it isn’t true. The entire point of undergoing hip replacement surgery is to reduce your pain and discomfort so that you can resume normal activities. However, there are some restrictions.

High-impact activities and sports that involve jumping or twisting are off-limits. Even running may be restricted to maximise the replacement’s lifespan.

Thankfully, you’re still left with numerous exercises and activities, from gardening and golf to swimming and cycling. Speak to your physical therapist for more information about possible exercises with a hip replacement.

Myth: The surgery is extremely painful.

Fact: Advanced pain management makes the discomfort manageable, and it decreases quickly.

The gold standard of anaesthesia for a hip replacement is either spinal anaesthetic or general anaesthetic. Both options will eliminate any pain you feel during the procedure.

It’s normal to feel some soreness, swelling, and discomfort after the surgery. Your surgeon will prescribe analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications to relieve your pain. Commonly prescribed medications include opioid painkillers, paracetamol, and ibuprofen.

Myth: You will have a noticeable limp.

Fact: With proper rehab, most regain a normal gait within a few months.

Osteoarthritis is the most common reason to undergo hip replacement surgery. Walking with osteoarthritis results in antalgic gait due to severe discomfort. Over time, this becomes ingrained in your muscle memory, and it can take several months for your body to adjust to your new pain-free hip joint.

Your physical therapist is likely familiar with this problem. They’ll work with you to solve the issue and restore your original gait.

Myth: The surgery has a high complication rate.

Fact: Complication rates are low, with most patients experiencing no significant issues.

Hip replacement surgery is one of the most common operations carried out – and among the safest. A 2014 review found that the 90-day mortality rate was 0.65% (extremely low).

Lithuania has the second lowest complication rate for orthopaedic surgeries worldwide. Kardiolita Hospital specialises in high-quality care and minimises the potential risks. Little wonder we’re one of the leading private hospitals in Lithuania.

In addition to following these recommendations, choosing a reputable medical facility for your surgery, like Kardiolita Hospital, will influence the long-term success of your hip replacement. We provide rehabilitation programs for 10-14 days following surgery to maximise the results.

Fact: Hip replacement surgery abroad is the most affordable option for patients in Ireland

Hip replacement surgery shouldn’t break the bank. Unfortunately, extensive waiting lists in Ireland force patients to seek alternative options in the private sector. It’s not uncommon for prices to be €15,000 or more.

Kardiolita Hospital delivers world-class orthopaedic surgery at a fraction of the hip surgery price in Ireland. Our expert surgeons have decades of combined experience using 4th generation hip implants to provide impressive results.
