Which asset classes benefit from high inflation?

    OliviaBy OliviaJuly 27, 2026No Comments3 Mins Read

In times of economic uncertainty, many investors ask themselves: How does gold perform in times of inflation? For decades, the precious metal has been regarded as a classic store of value and is often seen as a hedge against losses in purchasing power. At the same time, history shows that gold does not automatically outperform during every period of inflation. That is why professional investors typically do not rely exclusively on precious metals but instead combine various asset classes. In addition to gold, for example, stocks in certain sectors, inflation-protected bonds, commodities, or real estate can help make a portfolio more resilient to rising prices.

Which stocks benefit the most from higher inflation?

Rising inflation rates do not affect all companies equally. While some industries suffer from higher costs and rising interest rates, others can actually strengthen their market position. Companies with strong pricing power are often able to pass on increased production or energy costs to their customers without seeing a significant drop in demand. These include, for example, companies in the energy, healthcare, consumer staples, and infrastructure sectors.

The situation is often different for high-growth technology companies. Since these companies are frequently focused on future profits, rising interest rates can weigh on their valuations and lead to greater price volatility. For investors, however, this does not mean they should avoid technology stocks across the board. Instead, it’s worth paying closer attention to financially sound companies with sustainable business models and realistic valuations.

Different Economies Require Different Investment Strategies

Which asset classes are particularly suitable in an inflationary environment depends not only on the level of inflation. Equally important are a country’s economic structure, the monetary policy of its central banks, and the performance of individual sectors. That is why many investors’ strategies also vary from country to country.

The United States offers a good example of this. With an inflation rate most recently at 3.5 percent, many investors are focusing on quality stocks, high-dividend companies, and inflation-protected Treasury bonds (TIPS). In addition, infrastructure companies are considered relatively resilient to crises, as many of their contracts account for price increases, thereby ensuring stable revenues.

In India, the picture is different. There, consumer price inflation most recently stood at 4.38 percent. Gold has traditionally held much greater significance and is viewed by many households as a long-term store of value. At the same time, sectors such as banking, infrastructure, manufacturing, and consumer goods are benefiting from the country’s strong economic growth. This results in different investment priorities for investors than in the U.S., even though both economies are currently grappling with elevated inflation.

Diversification Remains the Most Important Form of Protection

The past few decades have shown that no single asset class consistently delivers the highest returns. While commodities or gold may be in demand during periods of inflation, stocks or bonds tend to perform better in other market phases. Therefore, investing exclusively in a single asset increases the risk of unnecessary volatility.

Here’s a simple example: If a person invests their entire portfolio exclusively in gold and the price of gold performs poorly over several years, the entire portfolio will fall short of expectations. If, on the other hand, the portfolio consists of a mix of stocks, bonds, gold, and possibly real estate, losses in one asset class can often be offset by the performance of other investments.
