What You Need to Know About Online Gaming for Real Money in the USA

    OliviaBy OliviaMay 15, 2025Updated:June 30, 2025No Comments6 Mins Read

Online gambling in the USA is a complex and multi-layered industry, with laws changing from state to state. It can be difficult to ascertain where you stand as a recreational gambler in the USA. If you’re wondering what you need to know about online gambling real money in the USA, get started here.

Is Online Gambling for Real Money Legal in the USA?

Gambling laws have always existed in the USA, both at the federal and state levels. Each “government” has laws to control gambling and money circulation.

At the federal level, online gambling isn’t illegal, but financial activity is strictly regulated. For example, the Federal Wire Act of 1961, written long before the Internet, regulates the transmission of funds, bets, wagers, and information across interstate or foreign boundaries for sports and related events.

In 2022, the Rhode Island District Court completed a series of back-and-forth decisions about the extent of the Federal Wire Act on Internet banking. The Wire Act strictly applies to sports gambling, which means other forms of online gambling, like casino games and lotteries, are exempt from this law.

Another notable federal law controlling online gambling is the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA)

According to UIGEA, online gambling sites have to verify the sources of payments they accept. If the transactions are illegal under UIGEA law, online casinos should not proceed with payment. This law ensures the federal government can monitor the sources of funds in betting. UIGEA also ensures that states control the legality of online gambling.

Since it came into force in 2006, UIGEA makes it illegal for online casinos in the US to process real cash for betting from you if online gambling is prohibited in your state. Your location matters, so it’s best to work within your laws or explore other states for an alternative gambling experience.

Since online casinos are required to be transparent with their financial transactions to the federal government under UIGEA, they’ll expect the same of you. Credit card processors and banks are also required to stop illegal transactions, further regulating the money trail. If an online casino violates UIGEA, the federal and state governments can invoke severe punishments for the business, including fines, asset seizure and incarceration.

When you register for an online casino for real money, you’ll go through a standard know your customer (KYC) process and be subject to strict anti-money laundering (AML) regulations. An online casino registration process typically involves:

    • Verifying your age
    • Verifying your identity with your name and state I.D.
    • Verifying your location by providing an address

Online casinos are also required to:

    • Comply with online casino licensing requirements.
    • Report revenue and regularly audit transactions for suspicious financial activity.
    • Provide problematic gambling deterrent features such as self-exclusion and daily, weekly, and monthly deposit limits.

States control and legalize gambling operations, whether sports or non-sports-related. However, since each state has its own gambling regulations, you have to research the laws for your state before online gambling for real money.

To make your hunting easier, the American Gaming Association has an interactive map that shows the state of gambling in all states, including online sports betting and igaming. They also offer a list of licensed online betting sites in your state. The state government also has a published and updated list of legal online gambling sites in your state to help you safely play for real money.

The laws vary per state. For example, Washington D.C. has legal sportsbooks and a lottery. However, it does not allow online casino gambling on poker, table games, bingo, roulette, and other common online casino games. In Michigan, online sportsbooks, poker, and casino games are available through licensed sites. In Mississippi, online sports gambling is only allowed within the premises of the 26 licensed riverboat and land-based casinos. Any online gambling outside those geographical areas is illegal.
