Creative Ways to Manage Your Bankroll When Playing Games

    OliviaBy OliviaMay 18, 2026Updated:May 19, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read
Bankroll management remains a crucial aspect of gambling, whether it’s done online or in physical casinos.

Playing slots on a casino trip or at an online platform provides a way to gamble on a large variety of games, but what are the best ways to manage your bankroll? While this depends on your overall style and objectives, we can look at a few situations where understanding how these games work gives you an edge.

Understand Which Games Have Lower Volatility

The online slots sector has grown enormously in recent times, as far more games have been added. While this might initially make it seem more confusing than playing in a physical casino, the fact that these slots are divided into categories and have online paytables gives you an easy way to see which ones suit you best.

This list shows you how you can pick a title and play low volatility slots for fun. Games like Bigger Cash Win, Buffalo Bounty, and Reindeer Wild Wins reveal that there’s a lot of variety in this category to choose from. However, the volatility level doesn’t affect the way you play or the symbols used, so what does it mean?

A low volatility slot is one that is expected to make small but frequent payouts. While each individual spin is going to have a random outcome, a look at the paytable lets us understand why the volatility typically remains low. Rather than large jackpot payouts, these games generally have smaller prizes, meaning that you would normally expect a steadier experience.

The volatility shouldn’t be confused with the return to player (RTP), which is a percentage telling us how much the operator expects to pay back to players over a large number of spins. A low volatility slot’s RTP tells you its overall performance over millions of spins, rather than its shorter-term payout pattern.

Choose How to Split Your Budget

Before you start playing, you need to consider how best to use your budget. Now that you understand the difference between low and high volatility slots, you’re in a strong position to decide which ones you want to play.

This really depends on how you want to use your budget. Are you looking for a short, volatile playing session where high payouts are possible, but you might also get a losing streak? Or would you rather have a longer playing session where your budget is likely to have smaller swings?

One option is to put a larger percentage of your budget into the games whose volatility level feels most right for you, with a smaller fraction going into the other type. The 80/20 rule is often a good guide in these situations. If you prefer low volatility games, you might decide that they should receive 80% of your budget, with the remaining 20% going into higher volatility slots with jackpots for variety.

Or you might simply put the full amount into the type that you prefer. It’s all about understanding the way of playing that suits you and then deciding how much of your budget to allocate to it, meaning that everyone is going to get different answers.

You might also see bonus buy features in slots and optional side bets in table games like blackjack and baccarat. These are generally higher volatility than the base games, as they offer bigger payouts but don’t pay out as regularly. If you’re going to use these elements to add more variety, you might like to choose a smaller percentage of your budget to do it with.

The feeling we see in this video, as the wins stack up, is always welcome. But you also need to be prepared for non-winning streaks when your budget is stretched, and you need to make a solid decision on when to walk away.

A Deeper Dive into Bankroll Management

The way you handle your bankroll is crucial to an enjoyable gambling session. No matter what games you decide to play, you need to consider how to approach this subject. One idea is to divide your total budget into units, with 1 unit making 1% of the budget. This allows you to more accurately set the limit on each game.

Another idea is to use specific loss limits and win goals. These strategies ensure that your emotions are taken out of the equation when you reach any limit. By setting these limits and sticking to them, you make sure that your pre-planned approach to a session is carried out effectively.

Use responsible gambling tools to set your session times and enforce the limits you feel are sensible. They help you to enjoy gambling games in a way that feels right to you. Whether you choose high volatility or low volatility games, you should always do it responsibly and with a clear budget in mind – you’ll find you have a much more enjoyable time if you do!
