Every winter, once the combine is parked and the yard settles down, I start thinking about grain handling again. Usually it’s because something annoyed me during harvest. A bin that wouldn’t cool, an auger that couldn’t keep up with the truck, a load that came off the field a point too tough and sat there giving me grief. By February the memory of that frustration has turned into a plan, and the plan has turned into me pricing out equipment I probably don’t need. If you’re anything like me heading into 2026, let me save you a bit of that trouble.
The first question isn’t augers or conveyors, or how many bins, or what brand. The first question is honest: what actually slowed you down last fall? Not what looked impressive at the farm show. What made you stand around waiting. For some guys it’s storage, plain and simple. They’re hauling to the elevator in October at prices they’d never take if they had somewhere to put the crop. For others storage is fine but the handling is the bottleneck, and a fourth grain cart doesn’t help if everything jams up at the bin. Figure out where your real pinch point is before you spend a dollar, because it’s easy to buy a beautiful solution to a problem you don’t have.
On augers versus conveyors, I’ll tell you what I’ve landed on after doing both. Augers are cheaper, they’re simple, and for a lot of operations they’re still the right call. Where they cost you is on the stuff that cracks and peels. If you’re moving a lot of peas, lentils, canola, or seed you’re planning to put back in the ground, that auger flighting is quietly beating up your grain every pass. Conveyors are gentler and they move a serious volume, but they cost more up front, they don’t love a steep angle, and they’re a bit fussier to set up. My rule of thumb: if handling quality matters to what you grow, or you’re running big enough volumes that speed pays for itself, look hard at a conveyor. If you’re mostly moving cereals and watching your budget, a good auger is nothing to apologize for.
Aeration is where I see the most money left on the table, and it’s usually because people treat it as an afterthought. A fan bolted on because the bin came with a spot for one isn’t an aeration plan. If you’re building storage you intend to hold grain in for months, waiting out a better basis, then airflow needs to be sized for the crop and the bin, not just present. Undersized fans on a tall bin of tough canola is how you end up with a hot spot in January and a very bad phone call to make. I’d rather a farmer put money into proper aeration and monitoring than into another empty bin, because the bin you already have does you no good if you can’t trust what’s inside it.
That brings me to monitoring, which has gotten genuinely good and genuinely affordable. Cables that read temperature and moisture up the profile of the bin, tied back to your phone, mean you’re not climbing up top in a blizzard to guess. I resisted this for years and felt like a fool once I finally put it in. It doesn’t replace walking your bins, but it tells you which one to walk first. If you’re upgrading anything this year, and you don’t have it, put it near the top of the list.
Now the part nobody likes to hear: match your capacity to how you actually market grain, not to how much you grow. These are different numbers. I know farmers with storage for two crops who sell everything by December anyway, out of habit, and I know guys with barely enough who fret every fall. Storage is only worth building if you’re going to use the flexibility it buys you. If having grain in the bin just means you’ll sell it in January instead of October at roughly the same money, you’ve spent a lot of steel for very little. But if you’re the type who works the basis, catches the carry, and moves grain when it pays rather than when the bin is full, then storage is one of the best investments on the farm. Be honest with yourself about which farmer you are.
A couple more practical things. Think about how new equipment fits your existing yard and power. A conveyor or a bigger bin that needs three-phase power you don’t have, or a bin site your trucks can’t get into when it’s wet, becomes a headache you live with for twenty years. Walk the yard in your head with a loaded semi in the spring mud before you pour concrete. And don’t sleep on grain drying if you farm anywhere that harvest comes off tough. A dryer feels like a big cheque until the year it lets you combine a week early and beat the snow. That year it pays for itself and buys you supper.
When you get to the point of actually sourcing this stuff, do your homework on suppliers close to home. Freight on bins and handling equipment is real money, and having a dealer who’ll answer the phone in the middle of harvest is worth more than saving a few dollars ordering from three provinces away. Last thing. Don’t try to fix everything in one year. I’ve watched neighbours mortgage themselves upgrading the whole handling system at once because it felt efficient, and then a bad crop year makes those payments a lot less comfortable. Pick the one bottleneck that cost you the most this fall, solve that properly, and see how the whole system flows before you spend again. Grain handling is a chain, and fixing the weakest link usually reveals where the next one is.
