The 3 Steps When You Want To Report Work Health And Safety Violations

    JustinBy JustinMarch 27, 2024No Comments3 Mins Read

Workplaces should be safe for everyone. However, sometimes things go wrong. Health and safety violations can happen. These are situations where work does not follow the rules that keep people safe. When these problems come up, you may not be able to rely on the boss or managers to take care of them. Workers play a big part too.

Sometimes, to make things right, an employee needs to step in. If you see something that’s not safe at work, you might need to tell someone who can fix it. You might worry about getting in trouble for speaking up. But there are laws that protect you when you report these problems. In this article, we will go over the steps to take to report health and safety violations.

    1 – Document the violation

It’s important to keep a record of what you saw when you see a violation. This means taking photos, writing down notes, and if possible, getting statements from people who also saw it. For example, if you see a machine that’s not guarded properly, don’t try to take a close-up photo if it means putting your hand near moving parts.

The details you gather are very important. Photos can show exactly what the problem looked like at that time. Notes can describe what happened and when. If others saw it too, their words can support what you say.

Sometimes, you might not be sure if something is really a safety violation or how to document it. In cases like this, it’s okay to seek advice from independent legal help. They can tell you the best way to record what you’ve seen and what steps to take next.

2 – Making an internal report

After you have safely documented the violation, the next step is to report it inside your company. This usually means talking to your supervisor or a health and safety officer if your workplace has one. These are the people who are supposed to handle these issues. When you talk to them, bring the evidence you’ve collected.

Many companies have a way for you to report things by anonymous reporting. It’s there to help people feel safe when they’re worried about possible negative reactions for speaking up. If your workplace has this option, you can use it to report what you’ve seen without anyone knowing it was you.

    3 – Seek support

If you come across a health and safety issue at work, you’re usually not alone. There are people and organizations ready to help you. Many workplaces have health and safety representatives or even unions. These representatives know a lot about safety rules and can give you advice on what to do next. They can also talk to your bosses for you, if you’re worried about doing it yourself.

Unions are also very helpful in these situations. They protect workers’ rights, including safety. If you’re a member of a union, you can contact them for support.
