How to Prepare Your Family Vehicle for a Comfortable and Sun-Safe Road Trip

    OliviaBy OliviaAugust 7, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

Australians have long held a deep affection for the open road. According to recent surveys, nearly 92 percent of Australians have recently taken a road trip, viewing vehicle-based travel as a highly appealing and cost-effective holiday option. This domestic travel boom is further supported by KPMG economic analysis, which reveals that Australian spending on holiday fuel has surged by almost 70 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels. For many parents, these journeys are about much more than just reaching a destination. As frequently explored in resources covering smart family travel planning, the emotional and developmental benefits of taking family vacations often yield lifelong positive memories for children that easily surpass the fleeting joy of expensive material gifts.

However, travelling long distances with children requires careful foresight to ensure everyone remains safe, comfortable, and content. Before you pack the boot and head out onto the highway, it is crucial to prepare your family vehicle specifically for the harsh Australian climate.

Protecting Passengers from Harmful UV Exposure

While air conditioning helps manage internal temperatures, it does nothing to stop ultraviolet radiation from penetrating the vehicle. Cancer Council Australia strongly advises occupants spending long periods in a vehicle to implement active sun protection measures, especially when the local UV index reaches 3 or above. Many drivers assume that closed windows provide adequate protection from the sun, but recent data proves otherwise.

A recent observational study published on PubMed evaluated UV-A and UV-B transmission rates across different types of automotive glass. The study found that front windshields provide an average UV-A attenuation of 99.25 percent, whereas driver side windows offer only 88.78 percent. The researchers concluded that most vehicles lack sufficient and consistent UV-A protection for side and rear passengers. This lack of protection explains why Australian dermatology data highlights that skin cancers and pre-cancerous growths disproportionately affect the right side of the face and the right arm, directly correlating with right-hand driver UV exposure through side windows.

To safeguard back-seat passengers who are exposed to this transmitted radiation, proactive shading is essential. Installing a high-quality car rear window shade significantly reduces the amount of UV radiation and glare reaching your children. This simple addition not only protects vulnerable skin from cumulative sun damage but also prevents the blinding glare that often leads to passenger discomfort during long afternoon drives.

Managing Cabin Temperature and Heat Risks

The Australian sun is notoriously intense, and a car interior can quickly become a dangerous environment if not properly managed. Tests conducted by the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) demonstrate that vehicle cabin temperatures can dangerously exceed 70 degrees Celsius within minutes when the outside temperature is just 30 degrees. This rapid heat accumulation is highly hazardous for babies and young children, whose core body temperatures rise three to five times faster than those of adults.

Standard tempered side windows allow most visible and infrared radiation to pass through, creating a greenhouse effect that pushes an interior cabin above 40 degrees Celsius even on a mild 22-degree day. Automotive safety experts warn that leaving a vehicle’s windows slightly cracked has no significant effect on slowing this dangerous temperature rise. Highlighting this risk, Ambulance Victoria recently recorded over 1,200 emergency call-outs in a 12-month period for people trapped in cars, with the vast majority of these incidents involving babies and children. Keeping the cabin cool while driving and parked must be an absolute priority for any family road trip.

Reducing Driver Distraction for a Safer Journey

Beyond physical health, maintaining a comfortable environment in the back seat plays a vital role in overall road safety. A recent Budget Direct road safety survey found that distracted driving is considered the sixth leading cause of motor vehicle accidents by Australian drivers. Interestingly, a significant portion of this distraction originates from inside the cabin itself.

Research from the Monash University Accident Research Centre shows that interacting with child passengers in the rear seat accounts for approximately 12 percent of all distracting activities that drivers engage in. When children experience physical discomfort from excessive heat or direct sun glare, they naturally complain or become restless. This dramatically increases a driver’s cognitive distraction, drawing their focus away from safe road operation to manage the situation in the back seat.

To ensure a smooth and safe trip, consider implementing the following vehicle preparation steps:

    • Check your air conditioning system before departure to ensure it is running at peak efficiency.
    • Apply appropriate sun protection to all passengers, including sunscreen and protective clothing, before getting into the car.
    • Install fitted window shades to block glare and reduce the overall temperature in the rear cabin.
    • Pack an accessible cooler with plenty of chilled water to keep everyone hydrated.
    • Schedule frequent rest stops in shaded areas to allow children to stretch and cool down outside the vehicle.

Taking a family road trip should be an enjoyable experience that allows you to bond and explore the country together. In fact, Tourism and Events Queensland notes that 16 percent of Australian travellers hit the road specifically to recreate the sentimental family holidays of their youth. By taking the time to properly prepare your vehicle for the intense sun and heat, you can protect your family’s health, minimise driving distractions, and focus entirely on creating wonderful new memories.
