Top Tips for Buying the Best Pickleball Paddle

    JustinBy JustinJanuary 14, 2025Updated:June 10, 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Pickleball ticks most, if not all, of the boxes when considering a practical low-impact exercise option. That’s why many people opt to install a pickleball court on their properties. So, you’ve picked the backyard as an ideal location and even researched how to build a pickleball court, but what else do you need? One of the items you can’t afford to go wrong with is the pickleball paddle. Here are simple tips to help you pick a pickleball paddle that’ll work best for you.

    Consider the weight

Weight is a crucial consideration, mainly because it affects how well you can control the paddle. The weight affects how it feels to take it up and swing. For example, a heavier paddle can drive the ball more forcefully, but it may also cause you to lose control or “touch.” On the other hand, a lighter paddle can offer better ball control and feel but won’t produce as strong of a drive. Therefore, you need to consider how much weight you can comfortably handle. Go heavy if you feel that you need force, or lighter if you feel that you need more touch. If you’re unsure, opt for a mid-weight paddle. This should offer you the necessary control and touch while delivering adequate power.

    Check the grip

Does the paddle have the right grip circumference, or will you struggle to hold it snugly in your hands? Personal preferences can greatly influence the grip, but it is better to narrow it down to a size that matches your hands. One of the quick ways to narrow down an ideal paddle grip is to consider your hand size. For instance, if you are under 5’2″, a 4-inch grip, which is small, is recommended. For those at 5’3″ to 5’8″, a 4 1/4 inch grip (medium) is a suitable fit. If you are 5’9″ or taller, a large grip, measuring 4 1/2 inches, is more suitable. You can also go for a medium grip but build it up by adding an over-grip.

Another way to get around the grip size is by doing a ring finger test. Hold the dominant palm up, and with a ruler, measure the creases of the palm from the middle to the tip of the ring finger. The measure gives you a clearer understanding of your grip size, but if you are not confident about it, it is advisable to pick the smaller of the options.

While finding the right grip size is key to paddle control, overall comfort and performance also depend on your footwear. Wearing gear tailored for the sport—such as pickleball shoes for women—helps ensure better movement, stability, and injury prevention on the court.

    The materials and price

Your budget is a crucial check, but don’t make it a priority. Instead, focus more on quality to ensure the paddle makes your experience more productive. For beginners, you may find wood paddles more cost-friendly and ideal for your gaming experience. This is because they offer great control and are cheaper. Composite paddles, often a blend of carbon fiber or fiberglass, are ideal for those looking for more control and power. For advanced players, graphite paddles are recommended, noting that they are lightweight, meaning you can swing faster for improved speed and maneuverability.

Finding the perfect pickleball paddle may take some experimenting, but it is worth the effort. The right paddle will significantly improve your experience, and with the above pointers, you’ll have an easier time narrowing down the most appropriate options matching your budget, skill level, and desired impact.
