    Starting a business has a lot of roadblocks and challenges to overcome. You have to work through all of the legal paperwork, prepare for opening day, get everything ready for business to operate, and don’t forget to hire quality employees! When you are just getting started, you need good staff that is going to show up, and you need them fast. 

    Hiring new employees is overwhelming in many ways. You need to know the ins and outs of hiring, plus how to find good employees. In this guide, we will share some tips to help you find the most effective way to hire employees for your startup business. Keep reading to learn more.

    Plan and Post Job Opening

    Before you can hire someone, you need to determine what the job is and what kind of people you are looking for. Take a few moments to jot down the specifics of what you hope to find in your new employees. Do you want a certain degree or experience level? Perhaps you want someone great with customer service or who understands social media. 

    Defining the parameters of the position you are hiring for will be important. Once you determine these details, you can post the job and start taking applications. Sort through the applications and then proceed with some additional steps. 

    Individualized Research

    You’re going to need to do some checking on the applicants that you are most interested in. YOu may receive some applications that you don’t go any further with. However, as you sort out the resumes and find applicants that might work, it’s time to check into those individuals. Checking them out may help you determine if it is worth proceeding further. 

    You can start with a background check and then interview and meet. However, when you consider the cost of background check options, you will likely want to start interviews and then determine whether you will proceed further from there. We recommend interviewing first and letting prospects know how your process will work from there. 

    Commit to Multiple Interviews

    It certainly is possible that you will find a perfect match for your job position right away. In most cases, you have to go through multiple interviews to find the perfect fit. This can be time-consuming, so we recommend scheduling as many interviews as you can in a week and trying to get through most of them in this timeframe. You can make some exceptions, but it’s better if you plan it out like this. 

    Then, when the week is finished, you can look back through your interview notes, narrow it down to your top three choices, and proceed with your processes from there. 

    Be Flexible

    You don’t necessarily have to bend on your mandatory preferences, but you may want to be flexible on some of the details you are looking for. As you think about the profile of the position you are filling, are there any qualities you could be flexible on? 

    For example, maybe your job listing requested someone with five years of customer service experience. In your interviews, you were most impressed with one individual, but they only had three years of customer service. Is this something you can make an exception to? 

    There may be other details like this. It’s ok to be flexible when you feel that person is still the best fit. Your job expectations and requirements are meant to be a general guideline. 

    Know Your Resources

    As a startup business, you haven’t quite built up an employee base to incentivize new hires with referral bonuses. You certainly can incorporate that in the future, but right now, you need employees to get started. There are a lot of great resources for finding great employees; you just need to know where to turn. 

    Here are some helpful resources to consider. 

    • Local job advertising
    • Newspapers
    • Friends and family
    • Social media
    • Hiring agencies
    • Job boards
    • Community forums
    • Consider a recruiter

    These are just a few sources you can depend on to help you find quality candidates. 

    Be Attractive to Candidates

    Finally, you need to be attractive to prospects and candidates so they feel your job is worth trying for. What type of workplace do you strive to be? Bring your brand’s personality and intentions into the job listing. 

    Get creative, show some personality, and make this job look great for anyone who sees it. You want to give the prospects a good experience so you can attract the best possible candidates for your startup business. Build a great team, starting with the top line!
