Explaining the Legality of Online Games

    OliviaBy OliviaJune 6, 2026No Comments3 Mins Read

Though the iGaming industry has grown at an unexpected pace, it still has one great hurdle to overcome; people’s misunderstanding of the laws surrounding it. A lot of people are convinced that online gambling is illegal worldwide, while others think that the laws between land-based casinos and online casinos correlate. However, that is not the case.

When discussing online gambling, we have to keep a few things in mind; first and foremost is that different countries have different laws about the NZ online casino Christchurch Casino offers, and whether their residents can access them. So, in this article, we are going to explain how online casino laws work, and list some countries where these different laws are put into effect.

    Legal Online Gambling

First of all, there are plenty of countries that have outright legalized online gambling. In a country where online gambling is legal, residents have easy and uncontested access to casinos that operate on the internet. On top of that, these websites are also free to open headquarters in the country, and work from within its borders. This is key to remember for later.

One of the places that is most well-known for having a legal online casino industry is the United Kingdom. Not only were they among the first to legalize iGaming, but they are also most famous for the UKGC, an organization responsible for regulating domestic internet casinos. Other than the UK, most European countries have also legalized online gambling, along with certain US states, and Canadian provinces.

    Illegal Online Gambling

On the opposite end of the spectrum are those countries that have fully banned online gambling in all its forms. In countries such as this, residents are not allowed to access online casinos of any kind, and of course, gambling companies are not allowed to operate within the country’s borders. There are two main reasons why a country might ban all forms of online gambling.

The first is that the country’s government views gambling in all its forms as immoral. In other words, cultural or religious reasoning plays a big role here. On the other hand, there are some countries who don’t understand how online gambling has changed, and views it as dangerous to their residents. In a world where cybercrime is on the rise, we really can’t blame certain countries for doing their best to protect their residents.

    Offshore Casinos

Finally, there are certain countries whose laws prohibit online casino operators from working within their borders. However, the laws in these countries may not prevent gamblers from playing online. In other words, residents can access offshore gambling sites, but those same sites are not allowed to open headquarters within the country.

These laws are likely outdated at this point, and many countries that have laws like these are looking to change them, either to fully make gambling online legal, or the other way around. Examples of countries with laws like these include New Zealand, certain US states, certain Canadian provinces, and various countries throughout Southeast Asia.
